There are lattes you drink for comfort, and then there are lattes that make you pause mid-sip because the flavor is so deep and unexpected. The Black Velvet Chai Latte belongs to that second category. Made with Smoky Mountains Cowboy Chai, it’s rich, mysterious, and just a little wild — like a fireside evening in the Blue Ridge.
Our Cowboy Chai blends black tea with smoked spices, cardamom, and clove, creating a bold foundation for a chai latte that feels grounded and luxurious at the same time. The milk turns silky and sweet against the earthy smoke of the tea, and every sip leaves a lingering warmth that feels like velvet on the tongue.
The Inspiration
This recipe was born from our love of balance — the contrast between creamy and spiced, smoky and sweet. Traditional chai is brewed strong, simmered with milk, and sweetened, but this version leans into the distinctive personality of our Smoky Mountains Cowboy Chai.
Think of it as a mountain take on a coffeehouse classic: comforting but adventurous, a little rugged, and endlessly cozy.
Black Velvet Chai Latte Recipe
Servings: 2
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Ingredients:
- 2 cups water
- 3 tablespoons Smoky Mountains Cowboy Chai
- 1½ cups milk of choice (whole, oat, or almond all work beautifully)
- 1–2 tablespoons brown sugar, honey, or maple syrup (to taste)
- Pinch of salt
- Optional: whipped cream or a sprinkle of cinnamon for topping
Instructions:
-
Brew the chai:
Bring water to a boil, add Smoky Mountains Cowboy Chai, and simmer for 5 minutes. Turn off heat and let steep for another 5. -
Strain and sweeten:
Strain out the leaves and stir in sweetener and a pinch of salt while the tea is still warm. -
Steam the milk:
Heat milk in a small saucepan or frother until hot but not boiling. Whisk or froth until foamy. -
Combine:
Pour the brewed chai into two mugs, then top with steamed milk. For extra texture, spoon some foam on top. -
Finish:
Dust with cinnamon or cocoa powder for a “black velvet” look. Serve hot and sip slowly.

Flavor Notes
The smokiness of the black tea deepens when combined with milk, creating a caramel-like richness. Brown sugar or maple syrup adds warmth that complements the spice blend, while oat milk brings out the natural sweetness of the tea itself.
If you love a stronger, bolder latte, brew a double-strength base and use less milk. For something more delicate, increase the milk for a creamier balance.
Serving Ideas
- Morning ritual: Pair with a slice of banana bread or pumpkin loaf.
- After-dinner alternative: Add a splash of bourbon or vanilla extract for a dessert-like treat.
- Iced version: Brew double-strength, chill, and pour over ice with cold frothed milk for a smoky summer latte.
The Spirit of the Cowboy Chai
Smoky Mountains Cowboy Chai was inspired by campfire mornings and mountain air — rugged, spiced, and grounded in comfort. It’s black tea with backbone and warmth with intention.
The Black Velvet Chai Latte captures that essence. It’s slow and steady, bold but kind, and just a little indulgent. The kind of drink that feels like a reward for showing up fully to the day.
At Full Moon Tea Company, we believe good tea tells a story. This one tells of open skies, gentle smoke, and the soft hum of calm after the fire burns low.
