The Story of Earl Grey & the Rise of Lady Grey: A Sip Through Time

Few teas carry as much legacy in their leaves as Earl Grey—a blend so iconic, it’s practically the royalty of the tea world. With its bold black tea base and fragrant bergamot oil, Earl Grey has long been a favorite of poets, prime ministers, and afternoon tea lovers alike.

But behind this classic brew lies a tale of trade, tradition, and transformation. And at Full Moon Tea Company, we’ve given this beloved tea a western North Carolina spin—with our very own Appalachian Lady Grey.

A Quick Steep into History

The origins of Earl Grey tea date back to the early 1800s and are wrapped in a mix of legend and lore. Most stories point to Charles Grey, the 2nd Earl Grey and British Prime Minister, who was supposedly gifted a blend of black tea infused with bergamot oil—a fragrant citrus from southern Italy—as a diplomatic thank-you.

Whether it was to mask the taste of mineral-heavy water or simply a gesture of goodwill, the blend caught on. Before long, “Earl Grey” became a household name across the UK, especially for afternoon tea.

So… Who is Lady Grey?

Lady Grey tea came much later, as a softer, more floral version of the original. It was named after Mary Elizabeth Grey, the wife of the 2nd Earl Grey. It was said to be introduced in the early 90's by Twinings as a counterbalance to its predecessor. Often blended with lavender, orange peel, or cornflowers, Lady Grey has a more delicate flavor profile that balances the bergamot with brightness and lift.

She’s a little less buttoned-up. A bit more whimsical. And when she ventures into the mountains, she gets even wilder…

Meet Appalachian Lady Grey: Our Mountain Take on a Classic

At Full Moon Tea Company, we’re always drawn to tradition—but we’re never afraid to reimagine it. Our Appalachian Lady Grey honors the roots of Earl and Lady Grey, while adding our own flair.

What makes our blend special?

  • High-quality Ceylon black tea for bold body and a smooth finish
  • Bright bergamot oil for that classic bright aroma
  • Hints of lavender —a nod to herbal traditions
  • A bit of orange to add more citrusy sweetness
  • Beautiful blue cornflowers for a touch of whimsy and that wildflower feel

The result is a tea that’s grounding yet airy, comforting yet curious. It’s perfect hot with a splash of oat milk or served as a fragrant cold brew on warmer days.
